THE MAN BEHIND
THE MISSION
Joe was the kind of person you don't forget. He was quick with a joke, steady in a crisis, and always ready to lend a hand. A problem-solver, a storyteller, and the kind of man who never walked away from something that needed attention. Around our family, he was known as "MacGyver." If something stopped working, he figured it out [there might have been a few choice words along the way, but somehow it always got fixed in the end.]
Joe's dedicated career in aviation maintenance spanned over 40 years. He began by serving in the U.S. Air Force from 1968 to 1971, including a tour in Vietnam as an E4 Buck Sergeant, where he worked on helicopters, including the UH-1N, CH-3, and HH-3E. Those early years shaped not only his career but also his deep respect for the discipline, precision, and responsibility that aviation demands.
He then earned his Airframe and Powerplant license and began his first civilian career at Copters Inc., then went on to spend 31 years with Sunoco's Aviation Department, including 7 years as Chief of Maintenance. Aviation wasn't just a job for Joe. It was pride in doing the work the right way and knowing that the details matter. There was real satisfaction for him in solving problems, getting aircraft back in the air, and knowing that pilots and passengers were counting on the quality of his work.
At the end of his career, Joe worked for Boeing, wiring the inside of Chinook helicopters. In a full-circle moment that meant so much to our family, the Chinook was the very helicopter his father had engineered. His father's name can still be found on the original blueprints. Aviation wasn't just Joe's profession. It was part of his family's legacy.
Beyond the titles and years of service, Joe was unforgettable for who he was. He had a goofy side and a sense of humor that kept everyone around him entertained, whether he was cracking a joke or just being himself. He took great pride in his Polish heritage and made sure everyone knew it. He could often be found fixing something in his garage with a Yuengling in hand, wearing his favorite color: flannel, whistling and singing his own made-up lyrics to Bob Seger and CCR songs. He worked hard, laughed loud, and believed in helping people whenever he could.
HELP US CONTINUE JOE’S LEGACY
Joe’s family founded the Joe Zultewicz Legacy Fund to carry his spirit forward. By supporting students pursuing careers in aviation maintenance and the trades, we hope to honor Joe's lifelong dedication to the craft, his generosity, and the love he brought to everyone lucky enough to know him.
